English: The Dhikr by Eugène Baugnies (French, 1841–1891), oil on canvas (73.5 x 91.5 cm), depicts a Sufi ceremony in great detail: a group of men, seated in a semi-circle on straw mats in a mosque courtyard, practice dhikr, entranced by a Sufi mystic and the mesmerising sound of flute and tambourine.
