| JPEG file comment | MINIATURIST, Italian
(active 1440s in Florence) Portrait of Dante Alighieri after 1436 Paper manuscript, 295 x 200 mm Biblioteca Riccardiana, Florence This portrait by an anonymous master is in a manuscript, which collects the Rime (Rhymes) by Dante Alighieri, the Canzoni (Songs) by Bindo Bonichi and Sonetti (Sonnets) by Mariotto Davanzati, was transcribed after 1436. The fame of the codex is mainly due to the portrait of Dante to be found before the beginning of the textual part. The anonymous painter seems to have followed the description of the poet given to us by Boccaccio.
